Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in implementing video review systems.
Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Players will gain the option to question certain rulings made by the chair umpire, echoing the protocol already in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.
This development arrives only a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to review other situations, including:
- If a ball has bounced twice.
- If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.
Notably, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.
Practical Application
An illustrative incident took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.
The British player admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire watched a video and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.
Further Updates
Another innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This solves situations where spectators have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was out or in.
Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
