European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
