A group of seven alleged members of Germany's left-wing extremist group face trial over series of violent incidents

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost began their trial on this week, facing charges for violent actions against rightwing extremists that earned them the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

Global terrorist designation and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the United States designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist group along with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany claim the group was responsible for targeting locations in Germany and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are said to have using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several with serious injuries.

Trial details and international connections

The trial involving six men and one woman is expected to run until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, identified as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in Budapest during February 2023, around an yearly gathering called the “day of honor” that attracts far-right participants from across Europe.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T., is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis prior to the identical event in that year.

Historical background and organizational structure

The former East Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a high-ranking member within the organization, tasked with organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where radical left activists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities managed by Paul M, the group reportedly stockpiled hammers, pepper spray, disguises and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

Another militant previously active with the group, Lina E, became a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the US, freezes any assets they may have within the American economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

The German right-wing AfD party welcomed the American move and urged the German administration to follow suit. In contrast, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The danger from the organization has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have either already been convicted or are in custody.”
